Ruby Ginner, a pioneering dancer born in Cannes in 1886 was an important and innovative figurehead in the world of dance.

She attended acting classes with Elsie Fogerty, principal of The Central School of Speech and Drama, through whom she developed a deep understanding of ancient Greek drama and an appetite to develop the movement for the choruses.

The early 1900s marked the beginning of Ruby Ginner’s research into ancient Greece. She studied the ancient Greek artefacts at the British Museum, and continued her research with frequent visits to Greece and its islands.

Miss Ginner collaborated with other dance pioneers such as Ruth St Denis (one of the founders of Contemporary Dance), admired the work of Isadora Duncan and was a friend of Anna Pavlova.

Miss Ginner formed a small group of Grecian dancers whose work was realized and admired through public performances. Through her teaching for Elsie Fogerty, Miss Ginner met dramatist Irene Mawer, and in 1920 the Ginner Mawer School of Dance and Drama was officially formed.

It was here that my late mother Diana Griffiths was trained, and subsequently the Classical Greek Dance technique was brought to Shropshire where Diana successfully taught numerous students for many years.

Now her daughter Catherine continues to teach Classical Greek Dance here in Shropshire and to celebrate the unique work of Ruby Ginner there will be a presentation of photographs, a selection of books and costumes to be viewed at Church Stretton Library Tuesday from February 26th – Thursday March 7th.

NOW IN ITS 10TH YEAR!

Catherine Griffiths, principal of the well-established Diana Griffiths School of Dance, has a unique experience of combining an extensive career in early years education and the teaching of dance and drama to children and adults of all ages and grades. The much-loved Dance Expressions are held twice weekly at Dorrington Village Hall and on a peripatetic basis where the workshops may be incorporated into a wide range of childcare settings, in which parents and carers are warmly invited to take an active part.

Dance Expressions courses and workshops are specifically tailored to meet the needs of the very young, and Catherine can now offer all early years providers the opportunity to benefit from this programme, which fosters children’s communication, physical, social and personal development as outlined in the EYFS.

The Dance Expressions training package will typically include one 3-hour morning or afternoon workshop for providers within the pre-school setting. The fee will depend upon location of training and number of participants. This can be tailored to particular needs; if there is a need for more than one workshop, I am happy to offer follow-up sessions.
